I remember as a child seeing those short muppet performances on The Ed Sullivan Show long before there was Sesame Street. I have long wondered if they would hold up to adult viewing decades later, as I had such large memories of the joyful strangeness of muppets with exploding heads, big muppets eating small muppets, & worm-muppets dancing to tunes.
In this DVD era it's amazing what gets compiled for easy access, & I felt a small spark of delight over the availability of Ed Sullivan: Muppets Magic (aka Muppets Magic from the Ed Sullivan Show).
The best of these muppet vignettes turned out to be artful indeed, though it is very uneven to say the least, some bits suitable only to small kids, other bits somewhat more sophisticated.
This selection at least resolved for me the wonder whether they were as good as memory had made them, but it wouldn't send me on a quest for even more of the early stuff. Oh, Ed himself seemed slightly less of a dork than I remembered, but still a dork.
