Very Annie Mary

VERY ANNIE MARY. 2001

Director: Sara Sugarman

Despite Welsh accents so thick the film sometimes begged for subtitles, I hugely enjoyed this serio-comedy about a nerdy young woman who clumsily, slowly, at times stupidly, but finally comes into her own.

It is scripted like a teenage coming-of-age story, but Annie Marie is thirty-something, which completely changes the nature of her behavior which is by turns pitiful, unpleasant, selfish, with plenty of come-uppance & eventual beginnings of maturity. Performances by Rachel Griffiths & Jonathan Pryce are what any director would want.
